Historical Information
For thousand of years the Ohlone Indians used the Alviso as a hunting ground for the plentiful fish and birds available. The Spaniards first settled in Alviso in the late 1770's. Ignacio Alviso, a soldier who came with the explorer Captain Juan Bautista de Anza was first Spaniard to settle in the area.

In the 1800's with the increase demand for beef, grain and other food commodities for San Francisco and the surrounding communities, the port of Alviso became a major link for for the San Jose to San Francisco corridor. With the increase in commerce, hotels, bars, stores and homes started to populate the area. The port of Alviso came alive with ships (mostly steamboats) and stage coaches arrived and departed like clockwork to the busy port. In 1838 the town was incorporated. With the introduction of the railroad in the 1860's to the San Francisco Bay Area, Alviso's glamour and importance as port went into decline.

The Bayside Canning Company

The company became the second largest cannery operations in the world, with Del Monte as the first. The cannery was closed shortly after his death in 1936. Some of the buildings still stand today.
