     Campbell, California is surrounded on three sides by the city of San Jose and is west of Los Gatos. Pruneyard TowersThe population as of 2007 is 39,200 (2007 US Census Bureau). In the early years Campbell like many of the small towns and cities around Silicon Valley, the real estate was comprised of mostly farms with fruit trees. After World War II and continuing today, many orchard farms of this valley were later sold and its place housing and residential shopping centers (see Pruneyard).

     The total area of Campbell is 5.7 square miles with the average elevation above sea level at 196. The area was incorporated as a city in 1952 and the official city web site is http://www.ci.campbell.ca.us/.

     With the advent of Silicon Valley, Campbell is home to one of the major start-ups who made it big is eBay. The corporate headquarters is located in on at the cross streets of Hamilton and Bascom. Even though Campbell is almost completely surrounded by a big city (San Jose) with a population of almost 1,000,000 people, Campbell is able to keep its small town community. You can still walk to the local stores and the crime rate is very low.

Historical Information
     The city of Campbell was named after Benjamin Campbell who moved out to the west in 1846 and settled in the area now known as Campbell. The area with the start of the railroad became a major shipping area for fruit. Local canneries were built to fulfill the demand of the fruit shipments where downtown Campbell stands today.
