Los
Gatos History The Ohlone Indians became the first settlers
in the Los Gatos / Santa Clara Valley thousands of years ago. In the 1790's the
first Spaniards traveled through the area and settled in the area. As the area
grew, a trail developed through the Santa Cruz Mountains into Santa Cruz. The
trail developed into a road where goods were transferred back and forth into the
Santa Clara Valley. In the 1850's a flour mill (Forbes
Mill) was built in Los Gatos to supply the needs of the gold rush miners in the
Sierra Mountains. The town of Los Gatos was originally called Forbes Mill but
later changed to Los Gatos. In 1887 the town was incorporated and became an economic
focal point for the surrounding agricultural community.
The history of yesterday surrounds the quaint town of Los Gatos. Even though it
is considered by many an affluent bedroom community for Silicon Valley, Los Gatos
still has the charm and rich heritage of a small town.
