Historical
Information The Ohlone Indians were indigenous
to the Santa Clara Valley for thousands of years. In the 1770's the Spaniards
had arrived and built several missions in the area including Mission Santa Clara
de Asís and Mision San Jose. In the 1800's Mountain View was a stagecoach
stop in between San Jose (then the capital of California) and San Francisco. During
that time orchards and vineyards started to cover the area around Mountain View.
With the mild climate the town and the Santa Clara Valley became an important
agricultural center for the area exporting fruits, wine and other food staples
outside of the valley. In 1902, Mountain View was incorporated with a population
of 611. Mountain View after World
War II After the war in the late 1940's
the population exploded with the growth of the aerospace and electronic industries
in the Santa Clara Valley. Mountain View went from a small agricultural town in
the early 1940's to an area saturated with government and high tech industries.
Some of the industries included aerospace (NASA Ames Research) and telecommunications.
Today, Mountain View is still growing and diversifying its industries with the
explosive growth of the Internet and biotechnology.
