The
city of Palo Alto, California is located in the northern part of Santa Clara County
and is approximately 14 miles north from San Jose and 24 miles south from San
Francisco. The cities and towns adjacent to this well known city are Mountain
View (south), East Palo Alto (east), Menlo Park and Los Altos (north). Palo Alto
is comprised of 26 square miles with over one-third of that dedicated as open
space. To the west of Palo Alto is the Santa Cruz Mountains where most of the
open space borders. The population is 58,598 with an average income of 90,377.

was founded in 1891 by Leland Stanford and is located in Palo Alto. The university
today, has over 6,700 undergraduates and 8,000 graduate students. With approximately
1,700 faculty members. The university has over 180,000 living Stanford degree

Historical
Information The first people to settle
in Palo Alto were the Ohlone Indians, also known as the Costanoans by the Spaniards.
This group has lived off the land in this area for thousands of years, however
no known full-blooded Ohlones are know to exist today.
In the 1760-1770's Explorer and soldier Gaspar de Portolà started his trek
up near the coastline of California from San Diego and explored the area which
is now Palo Alto and the San Francisco Bay The
Naming of Palo Alto
The city was named after a tall redwood tree, "El
Palo Alto" that was along the bank of the San Francisquito Creek that
borders Menlo Park today. The tree still stands and is considered to be over 1000
years old and is the oldest living landmark in California.
