Brief
History San Jose has served under three
countries, Spain, Mexico and the United States. It was founded in 1777 by Lieutenant
José Joaquín Moraga (a Spanish soldier) and was initially named
El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe. It is also considered the first town
of the new Spanish colony called Nueva California and started as a agricultural
community.
After California was granted statehood by the United States in 1850, San Jose
was incorporated as a city was the first capital. During the next 100 years, San
Jose became the county seat of the Santa Clara County and grew to become the largest
agricultural center for the valley. Orchards and canneries dotted the valley as
well as the hillsides with apricots, walnuts, plums, grapes and other fruits.
After
World War II went through an abrupt transition and started to attract aerospace,
government and other innovative high technology industries. With this transition
came large population growth housing boom, replacing the orchards with houses
and industrial parks.
Today, San Jose has attempted
to control sprawling growth with high density housing, innovative building codes
and smart futuristic planning for the citizens and business communities of San
Jose. With these in place and a very mild Mediterranean climate, San Jose has
consistently ranked as a great place to live and work. |
